What is Reiki?

Laurel Steinhice, Channeling the Earth Mother (in D.Stein, Essential Reiki)

'I believe there exists One Supreme Being - the Absolute Infinite - a Dynamic Force that governs the world and universe. It is an unseen spiritual power that vibrates and all other powers fade into insignificance beside it. So, therefore, it is Absolute! I shall call it "Reiki" Being a universal force from the Great Divine Spirit, it belongs to all who seek and desire to learn the art of healing.'

Reiki  -  An Introduction

"Unity of self through harmony and balance".

Reiki is a powerful, yet simple natural healing system involving the laying on of hands.  Universal energy which is the energy of Spirit, God/Goddess, Buddha, All That Is, or Nature, flows through the Reiki channel, spilling out via the heart chakra to the hands and from the hands to the recipient which may be another person, an animal, plant, a situation, or environment.  This technique can be given and received by anyone. Indeed, the only requirements are a body and a clear intent to be with self and other, in a space of unconditional love and compassion.

Spiritual healing has had a place in almost every culture on earth. The word ‘Reiki' is a Japanese word for one style of ‘hands on' healing. In effect it is no different to many other forms of spiritual healing where divine source is acknowledged (whether God, Goddess, Buddha nature, Universal energy) and energy flow is facilitated. Reiki does not cure in itself, but enhances the life force vitality so the body's innate healing can be activated and supported to achieve optimum health. The Reiki practitioner does not need to direct the flow of energy towards a particular effect or action in the recipient. The direction and progress are determined by the body's inherent wisdom.

Reiki is taught by a series of ‘attunements', which is the drawing of particular sacred symbols in the auric field. This supports the alignment of a person's physical and energetic bodies and further activates the heart center allowing more energy to flow in a balanced manner. The Reiki attunement is permanent; however we need to practice Reiki regularly to develop our skills. Reiki can become a part of daily spiritual practice and mindfulness.

Reiki is a Japanese word, thought to have been derived from 'Raku-Kei'.

REI - means ‘Universal' or the ‘All-knowing and All-pervading Goddess / God Force' or ‘Nature'.

KI - represents the life force energy found in all living things. In other languages Ki is known as Chi (Chinese), Prana (Sanskrit)

or Mana (Hawaiian).  Ki can be defined as...'energy, air, breath, wind, vital breath, vital essence....the activating energy of the universe'. Ki is also the ‘essential life force of the earth, the planets, the stars, and the heavens, and these sources of the energy affect the living body's ki. Everything alive contains Ki and radiates it'.  (D. Stein)

Everything in this universe vibrates. Nothing is ever static or still. This constant movement produces energy. The vibrations of atoms and their particles create sound, light and heat. Einstein taught that matter is simply the condensation of light, ie energy. We just like to think of ‘matter' as solid...it makes the world seem ‘safer' or more ‘real' to us....  In actual fact nothing is ‘solid' but consists of moving particles or waves. The entire universe is one seething ocean of interactive energy. Everything is connected to everything else like an invisible web. No ‘thing' is completely separate. Quantum physics shows us that there is no such thing as ‘empty' space. One cm3 of so called ‘empty' space has as much energy equivalent to the entire physical universe's energy (just very compressed). (Lynne McTaggert, The Field. Quill, New York, 2002. pp. 19-42) There is constant energy exchange between all form and it is impossible to tell, energetically where one thing ends and another begins. Now both physics and spirituality teach us that All is One. We exist in Unified space. The idea that we are all separate is just a myth, largely based on limited human perception.

Reiki is an electromagnetic energy flow. We know that there are electrical fields around everything whether micro or macroscopic. Wherever there is an electric charge then there is a magnetic field produced, hence the term electromagnetic radiation. Every atom has an electro magnetic filed, so does our heart, our brain, plants etc. Practicing Reiki enables us to increase the flow or frequency of this radiation moving via the chakra and meridian system of our subtle anatomy. This can have healing benefits. The more we develop our compassion and loving kindness then the greater service we can provide. When we are consciously resting in a peaceful, loving, non judgemental space then the Reiki energy flow is greater.

reiki-hands-2Reiki is more a state of ‘Being' than ‘doing', helping us cknowledge the Oneness of all creation. As we truly connect in this way we feel greater love and compassion towards all life.

Reiki is a powerful complement to all other healing modalities. It will enhance and not interfere with other treatments. It can be effectively and safely used for people, babies, animals, ‘space clearing', as well as more mundane things such as loosening tight jar lids, getting more mileage from your petrol, increasing the vitality of your food and water, supporting seedlings or plants...the list is endless! Some Real Estate agents have noticed that ‘Reikied' houses sell faster.

Reiki energy is truly wholistic. The energy flows to the area most in need of treatment, to the cause of the issue, for example a client may present with a headache. Even if your hands are on their head, the energy may flow to the digestive area. The client may comment that their tummy feels warm or ‘buzzing'. Both Reiki and the client's body are innately intelligent so no direction is needed by the practitioner. The practitioner simply places their hands in different positions on or above the body and the energy flows. We do not need to force, push or direct it. Simply ‘being with' the client in a state of mindfulness and centered in the heart space is all that is needed. Every Reiki session is different and clients may have varying sensations, from warmth, coolness, tingling, pulsing or general well being and relaxation.

Reiki is nondenominational. Reiki training and practice is appropriate for people of any spiritual or religious beliefs based in compassion, love and a desire to be of service in some way. While the original framework of Reiki is Buddhist, you do not need to be a Buddhist to be a Reiki practitioner. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki wanted it to be accessible for all people. His aim was to develop a spiritual system that would benefit everyone - irrespective of formal religious beliefs. He wanted to assist people to develop their spiritual connection; to experience happiness and alleviate suffering through the development of greater kindness, compassion and generosity. Working with Reiki has a profound effect on the practitioner inviting emotional and spiritual growth. It is much more than a practitioner's modality, to be practiced only in the clinic, it is a spiritual practice that can invite us deeper into realising our own true nature and potential, working with our personal challenges and attitudes. Reiki practice can help break down our habituated patterns and habits, our ‘obscurations' to recognising the True nature of self, others and the world around us. It teaches us to know that healing exists within each person.
